Previous industrial projects
The company's principals have been involved in a number of industrial
collaborations, both as developers and consultants:
-
The Coloured Book Network Software was developed initially under state
contracts. This software provided an early implementation of UK interim network
standards. Following the introduction of file transfer and electronic mail in
1982, the Job Transfer protocol was released a couple of years later. The
software, which ran on VAX/VMS systems, was subsequently enhanced and
maintained in collaboration with DEC (the Digital Equipment Corporation - at
the time the world's second largest computer manufacturer).
-
An early implementation of a Local Network Technology was developed in
collaboration with Camtec Ltd of Leicester for the VAX/VMS system in the mid
1980s.
-
Some of the software outlined above was sold in a variant form to the
specifications required by BT. This variant was also supplied to NMW plc.
-
A project was undertaken in 1986 to assess the viability of the core of the
Coloured Book platform to act as a gateway for the translation of email between
the UK interim standards and the emerging international standards. This led to
the development of a significant body of code that was automatically generated
with a high inherent reliability.
-
Overall the software outlined above achieved a sales value well in excess of
£1M. It was used in most UK universities and a large number of leading
research institutes globally.
-
Specifications were written for the neonatal incubator system developed by
Seward Medical Systems in 1994. As a result of this development, further
development and consultancy work was undertaken on Seward's behalf to design
and prototype the system's control electronics and software.
-
In conjunction with Seward's development of its incubator, we were involved in
the development of a new signal processing prototype for their Doppler
Ultrasound foetal monitor. This system was developed using Object Oriented
technology in a platform independent manner.
-
Consultancy was undertaken over a two year period to assist Nortech Control
Systems Ltd in their development of new access control systems. We helped
through the provision of new code and design techniques that led to more
compact and accurate coding through the use of verifiable methods.
-
An Earthing Measurement system was developed based around a PC platform. Its
function is to estimate the impedance of grounding systems in the neighbourhood
of pylons and electricity substations. The developed system used estimation
criteria that had previously been implemented using prototyping software. The
newly developed product reduced the measurement and interpretation time from a
couple of days to a matter of hours. This system was thoroughly specified,
designed and implemented using UML and Object Oriented Technology. It has
subsequently been used in consultancy work to assist National Grid plc, Network
Rail and a number of Regional Electricity suppliers.
-
Consultancy has been undertaken over more than two years with a condition
monitoring company , Expert Monitoring Ltd, to assist in their development of
novel remote sensors. These have comprised both PC software and software on
their embedded systems. The PC and embedded systems communicate using
Bluetooth.
